What is Edge?

As young adolescents enter Grades 5-8, they experience many physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development. Their bodies are growing rapidly, their reasoning skills develop, boys start to like girls, girls start to like boys, and both are starting to think about what it will be like to be a teen or an adult. They are not really children anymore, but they are not adults either. They are at a unique stage of life, a place we call.....EDGE.

Edge is a Catholic- centered youth ministry aimed at these young adolescents and an important part of Life Teen ministry. The EDGE program is designed to meet their educational, spiritual, emotional, and social needs outside their school community found in our church community. As part of the Catholic Church's mission to evangelize and spread the gospel message of Jesus Christ, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to EDGE (Life Teen, Inc., 2010).

Catechesis and educating our middle school youth (Grades 5-8) in the Catholic faith is an important component of meeting the communal, spiritual, psychological, or social needs of the middle school youth. The Edge program creates an environment where the youth are part of a community rather than isolated learning in a classroom. It is a place where they can share, be themselves because we are the Trailblazers of Christ.

Goals of THE EDGE (Grades 5-8)

To foster growth and understanding of our spiritual experience of Jesus through the liturgy, which will allow early adolescents to experience the Word of God and the Eucharist in a deeper and more profound way.

To create a positive experience of the Catholic Church for early adolescents.

To gain an understanding and appreciation of what the Catholic Church teaches and believes.

To incorporate the Catholic Church's vision of social justice and peace into the spiritual life of pre-adolescents.

To develop an understanding in middle school youth that they are a vital and visual presence within the parish community (Life Teen, Inc., 2010).

In our Parish, The Grades 5–8 Youth Program, we call ourselves the Trailblazers of Christ.  It is a program designed specifically for the maturity and developmental needs of middle-school-aged children. Following the teachings and resources of LIFE TEEN under the EDGE Curriculum. This year, our theme is the Apostles’ Creed. The middle school youth will explore and break down the meaning of the Creed and its importance within our Catholic faith. Each month will focus on different topics connected to the Apostles’ Creed.

The program includes a variety of activities within the 1.5-hour session, including:

Prayer

Topic and group discussion

Small-group activities

Music and praise

Crafts and games

Snack time

At times, we will participate in Masses, Catechetical Nights, Reenactment of the birth of Jesus Christ, Catholic Summer Camps, Community Building in the parish and Adoration Prayers. We will also have social evenings, such as karaoke and games nights for a more relaxed setting.

EDGE Night in our parish is held one Friday a month, located at the Fire Place Room.
